Subtraction is not commutative
Changing the order changes the result: 10 β 4 = 6, but 4 β 10 = β6.

Subtraction With Borrowing or Regrouping
When subtracting by hand, borrowing (also called regrouping) is used when the top digit in a column is smaller than the bottom digit. You take one unit from the next place value to the left and convert it into ten units in the current place.

Borrowing across zero: 500 β 238
When zeros appear between the digit you need and the place you borrow from, the regrouping passes across those zeros. In 500 β 238, the hundreds digit is regrouped so the tens and ones columns can be completed.

Subtracting Decimals
